Topic 1: The Heart of Nursing: A Global Perspective on Surgical Missions
Speaker: H. Charlie, MSN, APRN, NP-C, RNFA, CNOR, CNAMB, FCN
Objectives:
- Describe the history of medical missions in the eighteenth to late nineteenth centuries.
- Identify six nurses involved with early medical missions in the eighteenth to late nineteenth centuries.
- Describe five ideal characteristics of volunteers participating in humanitarian surgical missions.
- Describe four ethical considerations for participation on humanitarian surgical missions.
- Explain 4 ways to get involved in humanitarian surgical missions.
Topic 2: Engagement in Health Policy and Advocacy: A Perioperative Practice Imperative
Speaker: Rebecca K. Vortman, DNP, RN, CNOR, NEA-BC
Objectives:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of perioperative nurses being engaged in health policy and advocacy.
- Identify opportunities where perioperative nurses can advance health policy at the unit, community, state, and federal levels.
- Discuss effective communication strategies to influence policymakers on a policy issue.
Topic 3: Patient Safety Trivia Hour

- Understand the principles of environmental sustainability in the perioperative setting, including the impact of healthcare waste, energy consumption, and resource utilization on the environment.
- Identify strategies and best practices for integrating environmentally-friendly practices into perioperative care, such as waste reduction, energy efficiency, and sustainable procurement.
